Expertise

Laser frequency stabilization; frequency and time; laser wavelength standards; trapped-ion wavelength standards; laser frequency synthesis; optical frequency; high resolution spectroscopy.

Since 1987, Alan A. Madej has worked at the National Research Council of Canada (Ottawa) in the field of laser physics, trapped ion optical frequency standards and precision measurements of Physical fundamental constants. In 1992 his duties were extended to maintain and develop the NRC 633nm Iodine stabilized HeNe laser ensemble which realizes the metre in the optical frequency standards activity at the Institute for National Measurement Standards at NRC. His work interests are the use of ion traps for confining and laser cooling single ions, the development of solid state laser sources for spectroscopy and precision measurements, and research work involving high resolution spectroscopy and absolute frequency measurement using frequency stable lasers. He is also involved in the development and research into atomic frequency/time standards using optical transitions in atoms.
