Five new NRC programs to support Canadian aerospace industry with innovative technologies

Supplemental content

Working and Travelling on Aircraft

The National Research Council of Canada (NRC) will make innovative improvements to create a more comfortable and safe journey for aircraft passengers and crew members. New technologies will be employed to optimize aircraft movements for a shorter, more economical trip. NRC will invest in the construction of a Canadian cabin demonstrator platform that will be used to recreate a realistic cabin environment, enabling cost-effective technology development to improve the overall flight experience.

Reducing Aviation Icing Risk

The National Research Council will address critical icing challenges for aircraft and engine manufacturers, suppliers and regulators by providing technologies, processes and facilities that will allow them to reduce the cost of icing product development and qualification. NRC will also work with Canadian firms to support the demonstration and certification of new technologies to detect, classify and help prevent icing threats.

Air Defence Systems

The National Research Council is engaged in research and technology development to meet Canada’s air defence needs, with a goal to reduce the costs and environmental impact of owning and operating air defence fleets. NRC will use its technology validation, certification facilities and expertise in order to support its industry partners in bringing new military technologies to market, implement proven technologies in Canada’s military fleets, and eventually transfer these innovations for use in civilian air travel.

Aeronautical Product Development Technologies

The National Research Council will work collaboratively with Canadian industry and regulators to simplify the certification and market delivery of innovative aeronautical products. NRC will establish technologies for industry to reduce certification time and discover performance risks early in the development cycle, as well as work with regulators to decrease the effort required to ensure safety standards are attained by all aeronautical products.

Civil Unmanned Aircraft Systems

The National Research Council’s resources will be dedicated to improve the adoption of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) for civilian use, in Canada and around the world. This will be accomplished by addressing key challenges with related UAS technology and regulation, as well as facilitating collaboration between developers, providers and key end-users for successful demonstration projects.
