Announcements - Governor General Visits the National Research Council (June 2011)

NRC Research will Reduce Canada's Carbon Footprint and Drive Energy Sustainability

June 1, 2011 — Halifax, Nova Scotia — Ketch Harbour, Nova Scotia

His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, visited the National Research Council of Canada’s (NRC) Marine Research Station in Nova Scotia on June 1.

During the tour, the Governor General had a first-hand look at innovative research dedicated to growing, processing and testing microscopic algae for use as biofuel. NRC algae researcher, Dr. Stephen O’Leary, gave a presentation on this exciting, emerging technology, which is designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and water pollution.

“Canada is poised to become a world leader in profitably converting carbon dioxide emissions into biojet fuel and other value-added products” says NRC President John R. McDougall. “We are delighted to brief His Excellency on this research”.

For the past 50 years, the National Research Council of Canada has been growing algae in sea water at the Marine Research Station in Ketch Harbour, Nova Scotia. Researchers are now examining the potential for algae to become a renewable source of energy for Canada’s environment and economy.
