Announcements - NRC-IIT Researcher Wins Best Paper Award at TALN Automatic Natural Language Processing Conference

August 24, 2010 — Gatineau, Quebec

Caroline Barrière, a research officer with the Interactive Language Technologies group of the NRC Institute for Information Technology, received one of two awards for the Best Papers presented at the Traitement automatique des langues naturelles (French only), conference on automatic natural language processing, which was held in Montreal on July 19-22, 2010. Her paper, entitled Recherche contextuelle d'équivalents en banque de terminologie (French only), focused on contextual searching for equivalents in terminology banks.

Ms. Barrière is an expert in natural language processing, in particular computational terminology and lexicography. Over the years, she has acquired considerable experience in the study of semantics, including word sense disambiguation, the notion of similarity and distance between concepts, conceptual hierarchies and ontology, the development of semantic fields, the impact of semantics in the understanding of language, and the difficulty of extracting semantic information from text.

TALN (Traitement Automatique des Langues Naturelles) is an annual science event organized by l'Association pour le Traitement Automatique des Langues (French only). The official language of the event is French. The event is an opportunity for students, researchers and members of the business community to review the latest advances in automatic natural language processing analysis tools and applications. TALN 2010, the 17th edition of this conference, was held at the Université de Montréal and the École Polytechnique de Montréal.
