Joel Martin, Randall Milburn, Michel Mellinger and Chengbi Dai won the prestigious Leadership in Technology Transfer Award for the transfer of Factor to Canadian-based Nstein Technologies Inc. Using a pro-active market-driven approach, the group worked tenaciously over an eighteen-month period to identify the opportunity, develop and execute the strategy, and finally form the relationship and establish the agreements with Nstein. Developed by NRC-IIT, Factor is a technology that makes semantic searches customizable and interactive. The team’s work resulted in a technology and research partnership that is valued at over $7.5 million, one of the biggest commercialization deals established at NRC-IIT.

Individually, each recipient of an FPTT award stands as an example of the entrepreneurial drive and risk-taking that are the linchpins of successful innovation. Together, both NRC-IIT groups exemplify the depth and breadth of technological and business talent in Canada's federal laboratories.
