January 23, 2011 — Halifax, Nova Scotia
The National Research Council of Canada (NRC) joins its Atlantic research, government and industry partners in celebrating Elekta Days in Halifax, January 23-24, 2011.
Elekta (Sweden) is a multinational medical technology company specializing in innovations and clinical solutions for treating cancer and brain disorders. The company has established an advanced imaging centre in Halifax through its Elekta Neuromag division.
During the two-day celebration, three senior Elekta representatives are attending a variety of events that demonstrate the strategic benefits that Halifax’s thriving life sciences cluster provides to Elekta’s research and development requirements; encouraging the company to expand its presence in the city.
Elekta is a partner in the Laboratory for Clinical Magnetoencephalography (MEG), a brain imaging lab located at the IWK Health Centre.
The opening of the lab in March 2010 was a direct result of a thriving collaborative partnership between the NRC, the IWK and Elekta. MEG is a user-friendly technique that uses sensors to detect and record brain activity, a procedure that is ideal for pediatrics. This advanced imaging ability could lead to the development of a number of new diagnostics for brain disease and disorders.
Elekta Days is an initiative of the NRC, in partnership with the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency Nova Scotia (ACOA), Nova Scotia Business Inc. and the Greater Halifax Partnership.
