Announcements - Dr. Sooyeol Lee Honored at International Symposium

May 27, 2011 — Chalk River, Ontario

Dr. Sooyeol Lee, a postdoctoral fellow of the University of British Columbia based at NRC-CNBC, was the winner of Best Poster Award at the Magnesium Technology symposium. This symposium is one of the largest yearly gatherings of magnesium specialists in the world and was part of the Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS) 2011 annual meeting and exhibition.

Sooyeol Lee’s research is part of the NSERC Magnesium Network (MagNET), which is a strategic network to address the challenge of substituting magnesium in components currently fabricated from steel or aluminum in order to reduce vehicle weight. Reducing vehicle weight will increase fuel efficiency and reduce green-house gas emissions. For this purpose, research is needed to develop low-cost magnesium materials with acceptable strength, formability and joinability.

Sooyeol Lee uses the neutron beams at NRC Canadian Neutron Beam Centre because neutrons beams are excellent probes of alloys to observe texture and internal stress distributions. His recent research observed lattice strain and diffraction peak intensity variations in situ during cycling conditions of compression and tension to understand the evolution of texture and internal stress in magnesium alloys.

For more information on the use of neutron beams to develop innovative magnesium alloys, see “Innovative Alloys for Autos.”
