Nervonic Acid as an Industrial Feedstock

Summary

High nervonic oils (24:1) may be used as chemical feedstocks in a number of industrial applications including polymers & polymer blends (Nylon 15 15), polyurethane plastics and foams, coatings and adhesives (modified epoxide resins & glues), composite materials and cosmetic formulations.

National Research Council of Canada's Plant Biotechnology Institute has successfully transformed Brassica carinata with fatty acid elongase (FAE) genes from Lunaria annua L. and Cardamine graeca. The transformed B. carinata with C. graeca FAE produced the following oil profile:

  • 35% seed oil content
  • 40% nervonic acid in total seed oil content
  • 5-7% erucic acid
  • 25-30% w-3 and w-6 fatty acids
  • seed yields of 5800-6000 kg/ha
