Researchers have developeda method to enhance a plant's ability to modulate water retention in response to drought conditions.
By over-expressing the gene for phosphoinositide-specific phospholipase C (PI-PLC), a sustainable supply of inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate is achieved, which enhances the water retention properties of the plant. Over-expression of this gene also results in earlier maturation without a reduction in yield.
This technology has been filed in the US (US6703539) and Canada (CA 2474939).
