Anti-malarial Drug Production

Summary

Researchers at the National Research Council's Plant Biotechnology Institute have isolated numerous genes in the artemisinin biosynthesis pathway. These genes may be used to metabolically engineer plants, or other micro-organisms, with a goal to enhance production of this valuable drug for the treatment of malaria. The genes that have been isolated and characterized from the artemisinin pathway include:

  • CYP71AV1 - amorpha-4,11-diene hydroxylase
  • ARTDR - artemisinic aldehyde reductase
  • AaSAD - dihydroartemisinic aldehyde dehydrogenase
