NRC Institute for National Measurement Standards

For close to a hundred years, metrologists at NRC have been researchers, developers, and guardians of Canada’s most accurate primary measurement standards, science and technology. Disseminating the products of their unique expertise across the nation and around the globe enables innovation, supports international trade, protects the environment and enhances quality of life.

Highlight: Detecting deadly radioactive material

Since 2007, scientists at the NRC Institute for National Measurement Standards have worked with Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) and McGill University to build a portable instrument capable of constructing gamma-ray images of radioactive material. The $3 million project is partly funded through Canada's Chemical, Biological, Radiological-Nuclear, and Explosives Research and Technology Initiative (CRTI).
