The Institute for Microstructural Sciences: Discovers, develops, delivers.
The National Research Council Institute for Microstructural Sciences (NRC-IMS) is one of Canada's most important research facilities devoted to discovering the quantum, electronic, and photonic properties of leading edge materials. NRC-IMS develops devices and integrates them into complex IT-enabled systems. The Institute prides itself on delivering prototypes and integrated system solutions for health, environment, energy, security, information and communication sectors.
Working in collaboration with industry and academia, IMS performs R&D into emerging information technologies in the areas of organic and inorganic semiconductor-based electronics and photonics. The last decade has seen a revolution in the ease with which we can communicate visually and verbally from the farthest corners on the planet. The next decade may well be that of ubiquitous and intelligent sensors that monitor our health as well as that of the planet. Through its programs and projects in the areas of Communications, Health, Energy/Environment and Security, IMS will advance the frontiers of knowledge and help Canadian industry thrive in these globally competitive sectors.
Cluster initiatives across Canada are generating results as critical masses of skilled people, capital and entrepreneurial drive come together to create beneficial technologies for markets around the world. The NRC Insitute for Microstructural Sciences is fully engaged in the Photonics cluster initiative, working in partnership with stakeholders on a number of key research projects.
