The People-Centred Technologies group is exploring new technologies and techniques in human-computer interaction to provide more effective ways for people to use and interact with information and communication technologies (ICT). The goals are to make ICT accessible and beneficial to everyone, regardless of location, physical ability, language, culture, computer skills, financial status, or software and tools employed. Some of our research focuses on the development of solutions for life-critical and community applications through the use of ICT.

The People-Centred Technologies group embarks on research projects that:

  • make major contributions to computer science, engineering, and social and community informatics research;
  • have local, regional or national benefit;
  • leave tangible artifacts for Canadian society -- whether a commercial or non-commercial application; and
  • can potentially be adapted to wider social, geographic, and academic contexts.

NRC-IIT strives in particular to make beneficial impacts on Canadian industry through licensing of technologies it develops and by working with external partners to commercialize, disseminate or apply the outputs of its research.

Our principal areas of research are:
