Interactive Language Technologies
Priorities of the Language Technologies Research Centre (LTRC) were defined through industry round table sessions, direct feedback from industry and other research groups, and through its participation in the Technology Roadmap process directed in 2004-2005 by the Language Industry Association (AILIA).
Language technologies are computer-based tools for processing oral and written information, regardless of the language used. They encompass:

- multilingual text processing (e.g., machine translation, translation and revision assistance, and information retrieval);
- management of information from multilingual texts (e.g., automatic indexing and synthesis, information search from one language to another, document classification);
- support for language training (e.g., evaluation of language knowledge level, tools to assist in writing and reading, pronunciation coaching);
- speech processing (e.g., voice recognition, biometric voice identification, text-to-speech and speech-to-text conversion).
Within the LTRC, the NRC Interactive Language Technologies group focuses its current R&D activities in the first two areas above, and is interested in working with partners in order to evaluate its possible involvement in the third area. As for speech processing, the NRC actively pursues projects in its application but leaves research activities proper to specialized Canadian R&D groups.
