The BVC-SI conducts research on technologies for high-engagement collaboration within geographically distributed organizations and networks.

Broadband visual communications refers broadly to two types of communications using broadband networks:

  • Live communications (videoconferences)
  • Pre-recorded communications (streaming video on the Internet, also known as web streaming)

BVC-SI will prototype two types of participatory BVC solutions that support high-engagement participation for distributed organizations and networks: group management middleware (the interface between the technology and the user) and video annotation tools (asynchronous/streaming video).

BVC-SI also includes a component of social analysis research: identifying how existing and new broadband visual communication technologies can be used more effectively in authentic use situations - meaning the technologies as they are used by real people to communicate in real-life settings.

Our research partner and collaborator focus is:

  • Distributed health organizations and networks;
  • Distributed research organizations and networks;
  • Distributed learning and training organizations and networks.

BVC-SI will create new products and services for commercial offering. This initiative will also help to decrease the costs for large group meetings and collaboration and contribute knowledge to a new area of study for the scientific and academic communities.
