Group Focus:
The mandate of the Eukaryotic Glycobiology group is to develop novel human vaccines and therapeutic agents against infectious and autoimmune diseases, and cancer. The groups research focuses on the development of conjugate vaccines, novel inhibitors of glycosyltransferases, and glycopeptides, with potential preventative and therapeutic applications. Ongoing research spans the range from basic discovery to clinical studies.

The Team:
Dr. Harry Jennings, Dr. Hui Liu, Dr. Ravi Nasi, Dean Williams, Qinling Yang, Dr. Rob Pon, Nancy Biggs, Dr. Wei Zou, Milan Bhasin

Ongoing Research Activities and Projects:
There are three main areas of research being explored by the Eukaryotic Glycobiology group: immunochemistry of conjugate vaccines, carbohydrate synthesis, and carbohydrate immunology. Specific projects focus on immune targeting of cancer cells via the bioengineering of their surface sialic acid; mapping of protective sialylated epitopes, small molecule inhibitors of sialytransferases, synthesis of glycopeptides, and glycosylation mechanisms.

Partnering Opportunities:
We are interested in scientific and industrial collaborators whose expertise/interest is in the following areas:

  • Development of glycoconjugate vaccines against infectious diseases and cancer.
  • Glycotherapeutic design.

Expertise and available technologies:

  • Glycoconjugate vaccine technology
  • Carbohydrate synthesis
  • Biochemical engineering of sialylated cancer antigens
  • Flow cytometric analysis
  • Carbohydrate immunology
