Fellows have access to Canadian time on these facilities on a competitive basis with other Canadian researchers, as they do to the guest investigator programs of satellites in which Canada participates through the Canadian Space Agency. Fellows are also eligible to apply for use of the optical and radio telescopes operated by NRC-HIA in Victoria and Penticton, and/or to apply for time on other facilities with open proposal processes (e.g., NOAO: CTIO and KPNO).
NRC-HIA operates the Canadian Astronomy Data Centre and has a library on site, managed by the NRC Canada Institute for Scientific and Technical Information (Canada's national science library). Machine shops, integration and testing areas, and a sub-millimetre laboratory support our instrumentation work. NRC-HIA also operates two telescopes (1.8- and 1.2-metre) on site and a radio observatory – the Dominion Radio Astrophysical Observatory – outside Penticton, BC.
NRC-HIA staff have extensive experience with the facilities of ESO, IRAM, NOAO, NRAO and STScI, amongst others, that they share with interested Plaskett Fellows.
