Fellows have access to Canadian time on these facilities on a competitive basis with other Canadian researchers, as they do to the guest investigator programs of satellites in which Canada participates through the Canadian Space Agency e.g., JWST, Planck/Herschel, and other programs. Fellows are also eligible to apply for use of the optical and radio telescopes operated by NRC-HIA the Synthesis Telescope and 26-m radio telescopes at DRAO, and the 1.8 and 1.2-metre optical telescopes at DAO in Victoria - and/or to apply for time on other facilities with open proposal processes.

NRC-HIA operates the Canadian Astronomy Data Centre and has a library on site, managed by the NRC Canada Institute for Scientific and Technical Information (Canada's national science library). Machine shops, integration and testing laboratories support our instrument work.

NRC-HIA staff also have extensive experience with many facilities around the world, including NRAO, ATNF, ASTRON, MERLIN, EVN, ESO, NOAO and the STScI, among others, that they share with interested Covington Fellows.
