The National Research Council Canadian Photonics Fabrication Centre (NRC-CPFC) supports the growth of the photonics sector by providing commercial grade foundry services.

In this section you will find more information about NRC-CPFC.

Who We Are

CPFC was established by the National Research Council (NRC), in partnership with Carleton University, with a mandate to support the growth of the photonics sector by providing commercial grade foundry services. The CPFC provides a unique advantage to its clients by leveraging NRC's world-class R&D infrastructure within the Institute for Microstructural Sciences (NRC-IMS), NRC's incubation facilities, and sources of capital for SMEs via NRC's Industrial Research Assistance Program (NRC-IRAP).

CPFC's vision is to be a key enabler of a vibrant and globally competitive photonics industry from its position as a world leader in photonics innovation and commercialization. The mission of the CPFC is to facilitate the commercialization and reduce the risk of investment in photonic technology by providing a world-class industrial grade facility that "bridges the gap" from innovation to product commercialization.

CPFC's value proposition:

  • Experience - NRC's 90-year history of helping industry.
  • Stability - Financially supported by the Canadian and Ontario governments.
  • Resources - World-renowned NRC infrastructure and research support from IMS.
  • Flexibility - Versatile tooling and processes.
  • Ability - Commercial manufacturing know-how and experience.

About NRC & IMS

Who We Are

The National Research Council of Canada (NRC) was established in 1916 and is the Government of Canada's premier organization for research and development. With nearly 4000 employees, NRC is composed of over 20 institutes and national programs, spanning a wide variety of disciplines and offering a broad array of services. NRC is located in every province in Canada and plays a major role in stimulating community-based innovation.

Working in collaboration with industry and universities, the mission of NRC's Institute for Microstructural Sciences (IMS) is to provide national leadership and to perform research and development into emerging technologies related to the future hardware requirements for sectors working in the areas of microelectronics and photonics. IMS' core research competencies include photonic and quantum devices, organic and inorganic semiconductors, nanotechnology, materials processing and nanofabrication, thin film technologies and acoustics. Via its Industry Partnership Facility, IMS also operates an incubator for start-up companies.
