NRC Biotechnology Research Institute

NRC Biotechnology Research Institute

Working both independently and in collaboration, the institute’s research divisions—specifically, the Health Sector, the Bioprocess Centre, and the Environment Sector—support these programs through their specific capabilities and technology platforms. Within these two fields of crucial importance to the Canadian economy, NRC-BRI’s priority is the delivery of leading-edge research and science and technology solutions to its clients.

In order to strengthen its role in Canada’s innovation system and maximize its contributions to key program areas identified in the new strategy of the National Research Council Canada (NRC), the Institute has engaged in efforts to consolidate its research activities in two programs: Health and Environment. The Institute’s Health Program focuses on the application of ground-breaking biotechnologies—including drug discovery and development—to the fields of chronic diseases, particularly cancer and cardiovascular disease. In the Environment Program, NRC-BRI’s researchers investigate the issues of bioremediation, water quality, and sustainable development.
