Header
As part of the header, the top navigation bar is the row of black buttons that must appear on all Government of Canada Web sites. The top navigational bar includes:
- Français– Provides the equivalent content in French.
- Home – A direct link to National Research Council’s homepage.
- Contact Us – National Research Council contact information including telephone, facsimile, mail and email.
- Help – Assistance on navigating through the site such as tips on finding information, navigation tips, etc.
- Search – Access to our search engine that offers quick access to information through bilingual (English or French) keyword or phrase searches. Perform a simple search on a particular subject on the NRC Web site, an advanced search, or a search on the Canada Site.

Left-hand navigation
This section is located on the left-hand on the screen, providing access to a cross section of the content of the National Research Council Web site.
- About Us – Access to corporate information about NRC, our mandate, vision and council, as well as access to corporate reports such as our annual reports.
- Business Opportunities and Services – Information targeted to businesses, about NRC services, our state-of-the-art R&D facilities, and licensing opportunities. Also includes information on industrial research assistance and NRC’s international reach.
- Our Research – Access to key information about the fields of research as well as the vast number of research programs and research projects currently underway at NRC.
- Institutes and Programs – A listing of all Institutes, Branches and Programs which compose NRC. Specific content associated to each Institute, Branch or Program is also accessible from within this section.
- Community Initiatives – Information by Canadian community where NRC performs a key role in the development of community-based innovation.
- News & Events – Access to news releases, success stories, speeches and upcoming events and conferences for members of the media.
- Student Science & Tech – An educational section for teachers and students to help bring science to the classroom.
- Library and Publications – Access to the NRC National Science Library, the NRC Research Press -- Canada's foremost scientific publisher, as well as NRC research and corporate publications.

The breadcrumb is a navigational tool that follows the information architecture of the website. Since information can be accessed from multiple locations within the website, the breadcrumb may not reflect your navigation path but rather indicates the “home” of the content within the website.

This section is located on the right-hand on the screen on many pages throughout the website. The sidebar provides contextual information about the institute, area of research, key sector, community, etc. being viewed.

- General Enquiries – General contact information, addresses and driving directions for NRC and/or context-specific contacts. Also links to the NRC staff directory and a searchable database of our research experts.
