Virtual Manufacturing

« Our partnership in the virtual technologies sector...
and IMI's expertise have enabled us to become
a preferred supplier... »
Kautex Textron Inc.

IMI has a Virtual Processing Laboratory for research and development activities in materials process modelling, simulation and control.

IMI's virtual processing laboratory

A truly integrated complex, the facility is included in the Institute's efforts to ensure the development and rapid adoption of these new technologies by industry.

The Virtual Processing Laboratory focuses primarily on the following processes and their derivatives:

Subject to industrial interest, the activities are easily leveraged to address other processes such as:

  • Compression moulding
  • Extrusion
  • Film stretching and blowing
  • Galvanization
  • Hydroforming
  • Matched mould forming
  • Metal powder moulding
  • Stamping

The research teams are the Numerical Modelling of Processes and Intelligent Forming Technologies Groups.

IMI's virtual processing laboratory

Our expertise and virtual manufacturing tools enable Canadian companies to meet the challenges of the new world economy:

  • Prediction of new production techniques;
  • Optimization of part design;
  • Reduction of material waste and process cycle time;
  • Increased efficiency of manufacturing processes.

"With this laboratory, IMI becomes the leading technology centre in the country that is dedicated to modelling techniques for the forming of materials and the manufacture of parts... "

Blaise Champagne
Director General of IMI
