Semantic Web Lab (SemWebLab)
The NRC-IIT Semantic Web Lab (SemWebLab) develops Semantic Web tools and applications and coordinates with similar efforts in Canada and worldwide. The Semantic Web represents the meaning of distributed Web objects based on metadata such that (interactive) engines or (autonomous) agents can search, integrate, and reuse required objects across applications with high precision.
At the basic layer, SemWebLab develops ontologies consisting of taxonomies (structured vocabularies), which can classify Web objects, along with rules for integrity checking and knowledge inference, which can be typed by taxonomies. SemWebLab also develops agents that use ontologies to support, e.g., the similarity retrieval and composition of learning objects. Semantic Web Services are the special case of active Web objects that can be discovered like other Web objects and be choreographed to run like agents.
SemWebLab provides the hardware equipment and software tools required for realizing Semantic Web applications, including:
- A multi-processor Data Mining (Dell 6850) server as well as a dedicated Apache web server.
- Semantic Web languages such as RuleML, SWRL, TRIPLE, and FLORA-2.
- XML, RDF, OWL, RuleML, and FOAF development environments.
- Prototypes including inDiscover, Teclantic, and Eucalyptus.
- Distributed business rule engine OO jDREW integrated with (RDF and OWL) taxonomies.
- The MONOLOGUE tool for Negotiating Exchanges of Private Information and the AUTODEAL system for Facilitating Negotiations in C2C Sales.
