Laboratory: Bioinformatics Lab

The NRC-IIT Bioinformatics Lab develops technology and services for the growing fields of health informatics, biotechnology, and computational biology. The lab offers state-of-the-art tools for the research and development of new data analysis, data mining, and knowledge discovery techniques to meet challenges in the growing field of bioinformatics. The Bioinformatics Lab is both a physical and virtual (online) lab that is a collaborative effort among core cluster partners. The lab represents an opportunity to enhance bioinformatics research and training in Atlantic Canada and prepares the ground for the future of health systems in the area.

The Bioinformatics Lab research is focused in four key areas:

  • Bioinformatics
  • Bioengineering
  • Computational Biology
  • Health Informatics

In order to provide the tools for advanced research and training in bioinformatics, NRC-IIT’s Bioinformatics Lab is equipped with state-of-the-art hardware and software:

  • Dell PowerEdge 1955 Blade Servers running Linux
  • DELL fibre channel storage arrays
  • Analysis software: R, Matlab, Maple, FlexArray, Weka
  • Bioinformatics software: NCBI BLAST, BioConductor, EMBOSS 5.0, Vienna Package, BioPerl
  • In-house designed software: microarray probe design, chip evaluation, visualization programs
