The Laboratory for Clinical Magnetoencephalography (MEG Lab), located in the IWK Health Centre (IWK) in Halifax, is the focal point for advancements in the diagnosis and treatment of brain disease and disorders through the use of magnetoencephalography (MEG) technology. A new, state-of-the-art 306-channel whole-head magnetoencephalography (MEG) with an integrated 64-channel EEG has been installed at the lab. It is the first Elekta NeuroMag® MEG unit in Canada.
The MEG system, located at the IWK Health Centre (Halifax) will be used to diagnose brain disease such as epilepsy and brain tumours, especially in children.
MEG technology represents a critical link between basic science and real-world clinical problems. MEG is a non-invasive technique that detects the magnetic field generated by the brain, enabling physicians and scientists to measure the activity of the brain in real time.
MEG gives precise information on the brain's function, including touch, speech, vision, hearing, and motor skills. It is routinely used for pre-surgical functional mapping, assessment of pathological functional deficits, neuropharmacological investigations, trauma assessment, epileptic assessment, and a growing list of research investigations in neuroscience and psychiatry.
Advanced diagnostics, such as MEG technology, can help ensure that treatments are timely and effective, which in turn saves lives and drastically reduces health care costs. The MEG lab will maximize the impact of NRC-IBD (Atlantic)'s hospital-based MRI labs. The Biomedical Magnetic Resonance Imaging Research Laboratory (BMRL) also located at the IWK Health Centre and the Neuroimaging Research Laboratory, located at QEII Health Sciences Centre are complementary and will be helpful in addressing medical problems, such as diagnosing brain disease.
The MEG Lab brings together clinicians and researchers, many with brain imaging expertise, and serves as a focal point for specialists from all disciplines.
