5 m Vertical Wind Tunnel

One of only three vertical wind tunnels in North America, the National Research Council (NRC) 5 m vertical wind tunnel at can be configured in one of three ways:

  • 5 m diameter open jet
  • 3 m x 3 m square open jet
  • 2 m x 3 m open jet or solid wall.

Originally built to support aircraft spin testing, this facility has been used over several decades for a variety of aerodynamic investigations. Many of these investigations have required the alignment of gravity and the flow vector, for example, in the aerodynamics of free-falling objects. The facility has also been used to ensure aerodynamic stability of many of North America's largest cable-supported bridges. Recently, the NRC Institute for Aerospace Research (NRC Aerospace) and the Canadian Department of National Defence used this facility to conduct measurements related to helicopter rotor performance during landing and take-off from frigates.

Tunnel Specifications

  • Maximum speed: 28 m/s (130 ft/s)
  • Turbulence level: approx. 1%
