Celebrate International Astronomy Day with the NRC!
April 29, 2017 — Victoria, British Columbia
Join us as we celebrate International Astronomy Day with the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada's Victoria chapter and the Friends of the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory!
NRC astronomers will be at the Royal BC Museum's Clifford Carl Hall with the local astronomy community from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to share the mysteries of the universe, and to demonstrate and explain all kinds of telescopes to view the sun and the stars!
Activities are free and family friendly, including:
- Hands on demonstrations. Try out a solar telescope to see sun spots safely, even build your own telescope!
- Interactive displays and expert presentations. Hear about the latest discoveries by Canadian astronomers, learn about the search for aliens, or “ask an astronomer” anything you'd like to know about galaxies, the Universe, and more!
- Giveaways. Learn about the constellations and take home a backyard "star finder" or constellation card.
In the evening, celebrations move to the NRC's Dominion Astrophysical Observatory high on Observatory Hill for the kickoff of the 2017 season's Saturday evening Star Parties – a popular local tradition that's been taking place at DAO for a hundred years.
The Star Party is free but due to limited space on the Hill, Eventbrite tickets are required. Please visit the website Friends of the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory or by email for information about tickets.
