Over the past few years, there has been a quiet revolution in display manufacturing technology. The e-ink electro-chemical pixel, combined with advances in organic thin film circuit boards have resulted in displays that are so thin and flexible, they are beginning to resemble paper. Soon displays will completely mimic the high-contrast, low-power consumption and flexibility of real ink. This revolution marks a final frontier for Human-Computer Interaction: one in which computers can have any organic form or shape, rather than the rigid technological surfaces of DynaBook. This new paradigm of Organic User Interface (Oui!) requires a new set of design guidelines, guidelines that Roel Vertegall borrowed from architecture, which went through a similar transformation decades ago. In this presentation, Roel will review Oui! design principles along the organic architectures of Frank Lloyd Wright and Frank Gehry, discussing implications for user interface design of computer systems that have any shape or form. This presentation will give an overview of technologies such as Tangible UI that led to Organic UI, and discuss some example OUI interfaces, such as Gummi and PaperWindows, one of the first truly organic user interfaces.
Dr. Roel Vertegaal is one of Canada's foremost designers of highly futuristic interactive technologies. Roel is an Associate Professor in Human-Computer Interaction at the prestigious Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario, where he directs the Human Media Laboratory. He is also CEO of Xuuk Inc., a start-up that develops attention sensors for interactive, real-world viewing statistics gathering. Roel's first degree is in Electronic Music from Utrecht Conservatory in the Netherlands. He also studied Computing in Britain, Visual Design in The Hague, and holds a PhD in Human Factors from Twente University. Roel is one of the world's experts on eye communication between humans, and between humans and technology. He received the Premier of Ontario's Research Excellence Award for his work on Attentive User Interfaces (AUI), which was featured in media across the globe, from Good Morning America to Scientific American. Roel helped create the first North-American conference on Eye Tracking (ACM ETRA), established ALT.CHI as an alternative papers venue at the annual ACM SIGCHI conference and advised the National Academy of Sciences on AUI. His current interest is in Organic User Interface design.
