Mona Lisa
A Scientific Examination

Abstract
In 2004, at the request of the Louvre, the Centre de recherche et de restauration des musées de France (C2RMF) undertook the most comprehensive scientific examination and study of the Mona Lisa completed to date. As part of the project, a team of 3D imaging scientists from the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) were invited to Paris in October, 2004 to undertake the 3D scanning of the painting using instruments and technologies developed at NRC. The objective of this project was to scan the Mona Lisa - obverse and reverse - in order to provide high-resolution 3D image data of the complete painting.

The NRC lecture presentation “Mona Lisa: A Scientific Examination” presented by members of the NRC and C2RMF teams will include an overview of the project including unique new image details which shed light on the condition of the painting, its history and on Leonardo da Vinci's technique.

The never seen before 3D model will allow a close virtual examination of the Mona Lisa by the specialist and the non-specialist alike, without any risk of damage to the painting, thousands of kilometers away from Paris.
