This photo shows a thick block of traditional thermal insulation (right) along with much thinner, high performance vacuum insulation panels or VIPs (left), which have superior thermal resistance properties. VIPs can provide more than 10 times higher thermal efficiency than conventional insulation materials. NRC researchers are currently working to accelerate the adoption of VIPs by the construction industry. Their goals include developing alternative core materials such as biofibres to reduce costs, defining long-term performance, and specifying installation details, etc.
