Acting Director General, NRC Steacie Institute for Molecular Sciences

Dr. James B. Webb is currently serving as Acting Director General for the NRC Steacie Institute for Molecular Sciences (NRC-SIMS).

Previously, Dr. Webb served as NRC-SIMS' Director of Research since 2003, where his wealth of insight and experience proved instrumental in driving the success of research programs.

After receiving his Ph.D. in 1975 from the University of Waterloo, Dr. Webb began his career as a research associate with the Physics Department at Queen's University. In 1977, he joined NRC's Division of Chemistry as part of Dr. Digby Williams' Chemical Physics Group. Under Dr. Webb's leadership, the Chemical Physics Group joined NRC's Division of Physics and later, the NRC Institute for Microstructural Sciences (NRC-IMS).

Prior to joining NRC-SIMS, Dr. Webb served as group leader for advanced processes at NRC-IMS as well as principal research officer and project leader for the institute's activities in gallium nitride. During his tenure at NRC-IMS, Dr. Webb excelled at leading and motivating teams to help develop new technology solutions in highly competitive environments.

Dr. Webb has a proven track record in applying multidisciplinary approaches to materials science, and has earned an excellent reputation, both nationally and internationally, in the fields of organic and inorganic semiconductors. He has more than 28 years of expertise in leading-edge scientific research with more than 170 publications, and over a decade of program management experience in collaborative research among NRC, private industry and academic parties.
