Dr. Ian C.P. Smith has dedicated his career to early detection and treatment of disease and using this knowledge to advance the state of medicine and the Canadian economy.
Research at the Institute focuses on the development and commercialization of medical devices for the non-invasive diagnosis of diseases. Over the years it has started ten companies with a current market value of 300 million dollars.
Dr. Smith began his career at NRC in 1967. He holds an M.Sc. from the University of Manitoba and a Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, of the Chemical Institute of Canada, and of the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine.
In 2008, he was appointed Officer of the Order of Canada for his leadership in the advancement, development and commercialization of Canada's diagnostic technologies, notably magnetic resonance imaging and its applications in the field of health care.
