Reaching out to stakeholders

The role of the NRC Communications and Corporate Relations Branch (NRC-CCR) is to increase recognition of the role NRC plays in advancing scientific knowledge and generating new technologies for Canada. Through a variety of activities and products, NRC-CCRB communicates to stakeholders the many ways in which NRC is delivering on its business strategy, Science at Work for Canada. NRC stakeholders include government S&T decision makers, industry associations and opinion leaders, S&T-driven businesses, university and industry-based researchers, economic development organizations, educators and students, and the media.

The Branch provides these services:

  • Strategic Communications: Staff provide communications planning, guidance and support to NRC executives in the delivery of NRC’s business strategy. In addition to developing communication and outreach strategies and plans, staff work with NRC partners to manage issues and support business planning decisions, new initiatives and opportunities.
  • Media relations: Staff work with NRC institutes, branches and programs to develop and maintain a productive relationship with the media. This includes responding to enquiries from reporters, coordinating media interviews, advising NRC spokespeople, preparing media material, and monitoring coverage of NRC and S&T issues in the media.
  • Parliamentary affairs: Staff support the NRC president and executive team by advancing NRC issues with parliamentarians. In addition to coordinating events and meetings with ministers and MPs, staff provide quarterly updates on NRC regional programs and activities and prepares briefing notes, responses to parliamentary questions and motions, ministerial correspondence, and submissions to standing committees.
  • Design and production: A team of designers, writers, editors, a translator, a photographer and production personnel produces publications, marketing and display materials for both traditional and new media. Products include posters, booklets, pamphlets, reports, success stories, Web designs, presentations and items for special needs. This team’s production and creative support is available to all NRC institutes, branches and programs.
  • Web site management: Staff manage the NRC corporate Web and intranet sites to meet the information needs of stakeholders. This work includes the preparation of strategic and operational plans, management of content, analysis and use of user feedback, client support, and evaluation of NRC websites as cost-effective information management and communications vehicles.
  • Science outreach: Through interactive activities, a student Web site and the national distribution of print materials, staff encourage interest in science, technology and engineering among young Canadians. Each year, the Canadian National Marsville Program takes place across the country. Staff also conduct regional activities to celebrate National Science and Technology Week and National Engineering Month.
  • Internal communications: Staff inform NRC employees about organizational and employment matters, Government of Canada and NRC policies, guidelines, publications and reports, professional development opportunities, and more. The primary vehicles used for internal communication are the intranet, electronic publications, oral presentations and staff meetings.
