1. Opinion

It is the opinion of the Canadian Construction Materials Centre (CCMC) that “UltraPly™ TPO and GenFlex TPO”, when used as mechanically-fastened roofing membrane for low-slope roofing applications in accordance with the conditions and limitations stated in Section 3 of this Report, complies with the National Building Code 2010:

  • Clause 1.2.1.1.(1)(b), Division A, as an alternative solution that achieves at least the minimum level of performance required by Division B in the areas defined by the objectives and functional statements attributed to the following applicable acceptable solutions:
    • Article 5.6.1.2. Installation of Protective Materials
    • Article 9.26.2.1. Material Standards (roofing materials)

This opinion is based on CCMC's evaluation of the technical evidence in Section 4 provided by the Report Holder.

Ruling No. 12-13-283 (13348-R) authorizing the use of this product in Ontario, subject to the terms and conditions contained in the Ruling, was made by the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing on 2012-07-27 pursuant to s.29 of the Building Code Act, 1992 (see Ruling for terms and conditions). This Ruling is subject to periodic revisions and updates.

2. Description

The product is a membrane composed of three layers: a thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO) base layer, a polyester-reinforced fabric (scrim) layer, and a TPO top layer, and is available in black, white, tan or grey.

The "UltraPly™ TPO" membrane is available in thicknesses of 1.1, 1.5 and 2.0 mm, and in widths of 1.5, 2.4, 3.0 and 3.8 m, and is 30.5 m long.

The "GenFlex TPO" membrane is available in thicknesses of 1.1 and 1.5 mm, and in widths of 1.9, 2.4, 3.0 and 3.6 m, and is 30.5 m long.

3. Conditions and Limitations

CCMC's compliance opinion in Section 1 is bound by the “UltraPly™ TPO and GenFlex TPO” being used in accordance with the conditions and limitations set out below.

  • The membrane must be mechanically fastened to roof decks with appropriate Firestone fasteners and fastening plates. (Membrane can be ballasted or fully bonded, but would not form part of CCMC's opinion.)
  • The membrane is suitable for use on slopes up to 1:1.5.
  • Where seams are required, a minimum 40-mm-wide hot air weld must be made.
  • All cut seams must be seam-sealed with the manufacturer's recommended sealer.
  • Seam welding must be performed with the equipment and at the speeds specified by the manufacturer.
  • The membrane must be installed in accordance with the manufacturer's installation guide.
  • The membrane must be installed by manufacturer-trained and -authorized installers.
  • The membrane is limited to installations where access to the roof is limited to maintenance and repair.
  • The membrane must be stored in a dry, protected area.
  • The membrane and accessories must not be exposed to temperatures of 82°C or higher.

4. Technical Evidence

The Report Holder has submitted technical documentation for CCMC’s evaluation. Testing was conducted at laboratories recognized by CCMC. The corresponding technical evidence for this product is summarized below.

Dynamic wind load resistance performance rating is based on CSA A123.21-04, "Standard Test Method for the Dynamic Wind Uplift Resistance of Mechanically Attached Membrane-Roofing Systems." Rating Levels A, B, C, D or E refer to a pressure loading sequence that is comprised of a set of load fluctuations (wind gusts) with specified load-amplitude pressure levels.

When tested in accordance with the dynamic wind load resistance test protocol, the 1.1-mm-thick membrane achieved a D-rating (pressure resistance 6 272 Pa dynamic loading). This result is valid for installed membranes having a width of 3 048 mm with fasteners spaced at 150 mm o.c. The membrane was fastened with Firestone #15 (127 mm) pre-assembled heavy-duty fasteners and plates (63.5 mm diameter.)
