Scope

These Evaluation Listings apply to adjustable steel columns used to support beams and carport roofs. The proponent has demonstrated that the product meets the following standard:

CAN/CGSB-7.2-94 (Amendment No. 1), “Adjustable Steel Columns.”

The standard covers the following column designs:

  • Type 1 – a telescopic double tube with an adjustable screw and a support pin; or
  • Type 2 – a single tube with an adjustable screw.

Standard(s)

The standard requires the following:

  • Column tubes must be made from new steel with a minimum wall thickness of 2.54 mm and coated with rust-inhibiting paint on the outside surface.
  • Columns must be used with steel bearing plates, on the top and bottom, that are not less than 89 x 152 mm with a thickness of 6.4 ± 0.2 mm. The steel bearing plates must also be primed with a coat of rust-inhibiting paint.
  • The minimum outside diameter of a single tube column must be 63 mm. For a telescopic double tube column, the outside diameter of the inner tube must be 63 mm and the outer tube must be 70 mm. The outside diameter of the columns must not be greater than 89 mm to permit their use in 51 x 100‑mm frame-constructed walls (plane-finished dimension).
  • Three columns shall be selected at random for testing and the maximum allowable working load capacity must be at least 36 kN with a safety factor of 2.25.

Labelling

In compliance with CAN/CGSB-7.2, each column shall be labelled with the following information:

  • manufacturer’s name and address;
  • standard number: CAN/CGSB-7.2-94;
  • maximum extension (mm);
  • maximum allowable load (kN); and
  • grade and yield strength of steel.

These product series conform to CAN/CGSB-7.2-94. The maximum extension for each series and the maximum allowable load are shown in the following table:

2. Description
