These Evaluation Listings apply to commodity-type oriented strandboard (OSB) rim boards used in engineered-wood joist floor assemblies. The rim boards are manufactured to meet an APA – The Engineered Wood AssociationFootnote 1 industry standard and are subject to the APA EWSFootnote 1 certification program. APA EWS is accredited by the Standards Council of Canada (SCC) as a certification agency for structural wood-based products.
Evaluation to Codes and Standards
Evaluation is conducted to the following industry standard:
- APA PRR-401C, Performance Standard for APA EWS Rim Boards (Limit States Design), January 2005
Factored resistance values for limit states design values are produced in accordance with the principles of:
- CAN/CSA-O86-01, "Engineering Design in Wood."
Adhesive binder and bond durability of the "APA EWS Rim Boards" is equivalent to the manufacturer's OSB panels complying with:
- CAN/CSA-O325.0, "Construction Sheathing"
Product Description
The rim boards are an oriented strandboard (OSB) that is manufactured to serve as a rim board. The product is available in two grades, APA EWS Rim Board and Rim Board Plus, in thicknesses of 25 mm and up. The factored resistances of the APA EWS Rim Board and Rim Board Plus grades are outlined in Table 1. The nominal depths are available to match engineered wood I-joist depths of up to 610 mm.
Figures 1 and 2 show typical "APA EWS Rim Boards." The figures are for illustrative purposes only; please refer to the APA EWS installation guide (see end of this Preface) for more detailed information on the proper installation of the product.
Tables 1 and 2 outline the design values and basement window lintel spans for engineered buildings.

The lintel load calculations are based on the following assumptions:
- The lintel is uniformly loaded and subject to 'dry service conditions' only.
- The floor joists are face-mounted on the lintel with suitable hangers, and the floor sheathing is fastened to the top of the lintel at 150 mm on centre.
- The length of the supported members is as follows:
- maximum roof truss span = 9.8 m
- maximum floor joist span = 4.9 m
- wall height = 2.5 m
- The assumed loading is as follows:
- roof dead load = 0.5 kPa
- floor dead load = 0.5 kPa
- wall dead load = 0.5 kPa
- floor live load = 1.9 kPa on the first floor; 1.4 kPa on upper floors
- Live load reduction factor (as per Canadian Wood Council Span Book) = 0.9 for roof plus 1 floor, 0.8 for roof plus 2 floors, 0.7 for roof plus 3 floors.
- The lintel is assumed to bear on an SPF sill plate on each side of the opening.
- Total load deflection is limited to span/600. Shear deflection has been included using G=E/6.

Usage and Limitations
The "APA EWS Rim Board" is intended for the following applications and limitations:
- The "APA EWS Rim Board" is intended to be installed:
- to transfer all vertical loads at the rim board location;
- to provide diaphragm attachment (subfloor to the top edge of the rim board);
- to transfer in-plane lateral loads from the diaphragm to the shear wall below;
- to provide lateral support to the joist or rafter;
- to provide closure at the ends of the joists or rafters;
- to provide an attachment base for siding and/or exterior deck ledger;
- to span basement window openings that are no greater than 1.2 m.
- This product is intended to be installed in conjunction with engineered wood floor systems. The total factored loads on the "APA EWS Rim Board" shall not exceed the factored resistances of Table 1 (see APA technical support below).
Further engineering for the framing design may be required when deemed necessary by the authority having jurisdiction. When the building design is beyond the scope of the manufacturer's above-mentioned literature (i.e. concrete topping, concrete roof tiles, high concentrated column loads, high wind and seismic areas, etc.), the installation shall be designed in accordance with Part 4 of the NBC 2005, and drawings or related documents shall bear the authorized seal of a professional engineer skilled in wood design who is licensed to practice under the appropriate provincial or territorial legislation; - A 15 ng/Pa·s·m2 vapour barrier must be installed on the interior side to address the requirements of Articles 9.25.1.2. and 9.25.4.2. of the NBC 2005;
- "APA EWS Rim Boards" are intended for 'dry service' conditions, Footnote 2 as is the case for all wood-based composite wood products;
- The rim boards must be stored and protected from moisture and weather at all times to prevent excessive weathering or deterioration of the wood components, as is the case for all wood-based joist products;

Identification
Each "APA EWS Rim Board" shall be suitably identified and show the following:
- manufacturer's name;
- APA EWS certification mark;
- APA EWS Rim Board or Rim Board Plus identifier;
- CCMC Evaluation Listing number.
Installation
The installation shall be in accordance with the APA EWS Data File, APA Performance Rated Rim Boards – Canadian Limit States Design for "APA EWS Rim Boards," dated June 2004.

General Note: All lumber, wood-based panels and proprietary engineered wood products are intended for "dry service conditions." "Dry service" is defined as the in-service environment under which the equilibrium moisture content (M.C.) of lumber is 15% or less over a year and does not exceed 19% at any time. Wood contained within the interior of dry, heated or unheated buildings has generally been found to have a M.C. between 6% and 14% according to season and location. During construction, all wood-based products should be protected from the weather to ensure that the 19% M.C. is not exceeded in accordance with Article 9.3.2.5. of the NBC 2005.

1. Evaluation
The rim boards conform to ANSI/APA PRR-410-2011, “Standard for Performance-Rated Engineered Wood Rim Boards.” This evaluation is based solely on the APA EWS certification to the ANSI/APA PRR-410 standard.
This evaluation covers rim boards manufactured by Ainsworth Lumber Co. Ltd. at the following plants:
- 100 Mile House, British Columbia:
- Grade B2: 1 1/8" (28.6 mm) thick
- Grande Prairie, Alberta:
- Grade B1: 1 ¼" (31.8 mm) thick

2. Description
The product is an oriented strandboard (OSB) that is manufactured to serve as a rim board and is available in four grades and three thicknesses, as shown above. The factored resistances of the four grades are outlined in Table 1 of the Preface. The nominal depths are available to match engineered wood joist depths of up to 610 mm. Technical product support is provided by APA.
