Preface: Masterformat 07 21 13.19, Preformed Mineral-Fibre Insulation

Preface Issued:
2008-02-19

Scope

These Evaluation Listings apply to mineral-fibre thermal insulation in the form of batts, blankets, boards and sheets, with or without membranes. The proponent has demonstrated that the product meets the following standard:

  • CAN/ULC-S702-97, Standard for Mineral Fibre Thermal Insulation for Buildings.

The standard describes five types of mineral-fibre insulation. These CCMC Evaluation Listings refer only to preformed insulation, Types 1, 2 and 3. They are defined as follows:

  • Type 1, which has no membrane;
  • Type 2, which has a permeable membrane; and
  • Type 3, which has a vapour barrier.

The Standard does not apply to insulation less than 25 mm thick, or to preformed insulation used above a roof deck.

Standard

Table 1. Requirements for Physical Properties of Preformed Insulation
Test/PropertyUnitsRequirements
Thermal resistance (m2·K)/W mean thermal resistance ≥ the design thermal resistance (as stated on the product)
Thermal resistivity (m·k)W ≥ 18.5/m
Thickness mm mean thickness ≥ the design thickness and none of the individual specimen thicknesses < 90% of the design thickness; -1, +3 for boards and sheets
Width % -0, +3 for batts and rolls; and
mm ± 3 for boards and sheets
Length % -1,+3 for batts and rolls; and
mm -3, +10 for boards and sheets
Surface burningflame-spread classification no unit ≤ 25 (both applicable to Type 1 product but not intended for exterior of basement walls)
smoke developed ≤ 50
Smoulder resistance % mean loss ≤ 5 and each specimen ≤ 10 (applicable only to Type 1 product, not intended for exterior of basement walls)
Breaking load of exterior frame wall sheathing kg  2.7 (applicable only to Type 2 boards and sheets for exterior wall sheathing)
Compressive resistance of draining insulation kPa  ≥ 7 for greater than 38 mm) or
 ≥ 10 (for less than 38 mm)
Water vapour permeance ng/(Pa·s·m2)  not applicable for Type 1 product;
 ≥ 300 for Type 2 product;
 ≤ 60 for Type 3 product; and
 value for boards and batts as for coresponding type of batt or roll

Labelling

The standard requires that packaging for the insulation be identified with the following information:

  • brand name and the name of the manufacturer or supplier;
  • identification of the manufacturing facility location;
  • type of insulation and its intended use;
  • net content of package in m2;
  • design linear dimensions of the pieces in the package in mm;
  • design thickness in mm;
  • thermal resistance in (m2·K)/W to one decimal place;
  • on batts and rolls, the numerical thermal resistance value (or a simple code) displayed on the material at
  • every 1.2 m length;
  • date of manufacture or shift code;
  • statement that the product complies with the standard; and
  • for preformed insulation without a membrane, a cautionary statement as follows: "CAUTION: Maintain building, electrical, gas and oil safety code required clearances between the insulation and heat-emitting devices, such as fuel-burning appliances, chimneys, pipes, ducts and vents to these appliances (at least 50 mm) and recessed light fixtures (at least 75 mm)."

Where applicable, the product shall carry additional information as stated below:

  • if the product is intended for application at thicknesses other than the design thickness, the thermal resistance for each intended installed thickness shall be shown. These thermal resistance values and thicknesses shall be given equal prominence on the packaging and the units used shall be consistent;
  • the thermal resistance values and the corresponding thicknesses shall also be displayed on the material at every 1.2 m length (alternatively a simple code may be used);
  • any necessary user safety information, unless a separate information sheet is provided; and
  • any additional information required by applicable acts and regulations.
