Background

Working with clients and partners, the National Research Council Canada provides strategic research, innovation support, scientific and technical services to develop and deploy solutions to meet Canada's current and future industrial and societal needs. Guided by our core values of impact, accountability, leadership, integrity and collaboration, NRC is a dynamic and vibrant organization that, in its ongoing evolution, is seeking two Directors, Research and Development.

The NRC Ocean, Coastal and River Engineering (NRC-OCRE) research unit has operations in both St. John’s and Ottawa.  NRC-OCRE applies its expertise and competencies by utilizing its extensive world class people and facilities to improve the performance and safety of marine vehicles, infrastructure and other water borne technologies which play a critical role in growing Canada’s economy and supporting national policy objectives while reducing risk and improving operability of marine based assets, and delivering sound stewardship of our marine resources.

The technologies developed and applied by the NRC-OCRE research unit span a broad range including those for new marine vehicles and seabed mapping, ice measurement and methods of predicting structural loading in ice, improved coastal defences against erosion and storm damage, better marine safety and risk management systems and more reliable flood forecasting and modeling.

Your Challenge

The Director, Research and Development, provides leadership to assigned research unit resources, ensuring alignment with NRC’s objectives. Supports the General Manager in developing both employees and business or collaboration opportunities to create long-term sustainability for the organization.

The Director, Research and Development supports the General Manager by providing on-going strategic advice and solutions on financial, business, facilities and other matters related to the research unit.  This positions also ensures all staff continue to have the appropriate competencies readily available for programs and projects when required as well as ensure effective and efficient implementation of new and existing health, safety and environmental programs.

Screening Criteria

Applicants must demonstrate within the content of their application that they meet the following screening criteria in order to be given further consideration as candidates:

Education

Graduate degree in science, engineering or business from a recognized university. Preference may be given to candidates with a combination of science, technical and/or business education. A PhD will be considered an asset.

Experience

Significant and in-depth experience working with Canadian and international communities, technology trends and industries related to research unit activities, and the issues and dynamics that impact them.

Significant business knowledge working within  the relevant scientific and technological domains gained through experience with industry, government or other partnerships.

In depth scientific and technological domain knowledge related to specific research unit activities.

Recent and significant management experience including administrative, human resources, project management and financial management. Direct industry experience within a program-driven organization is an asset.

Condition of Employment

  • Level II (Secret)

  • Travel may be required.

Salary Range

From $99,900 to $129,700 per annum.
