Research Officer – Bioanalytical Micro-Nano Devices

We are looking for a vibrant and dynamic Research Officer to support our Medical Devices portfolio. The Research Officer would be someone who shares our core values of impact, accountability, leadership, integrity and collaboration.
The Research Officer will perform innovative R & D activities regarding microfluidic system design and methods for biological or chemical identification applications. The work will be carried out as part of projects between NRC and its government, industry and academic partners.
More specifically, this key activity includes the following duties:
Design, fabrication and characterization of polymer-based microfluidic systems for the capture, isolation and detection of biological targets from clinical, environmental and industrial samples.
Design of devices and their application for identifying bacteria and viruses in clinical, environmental and food samples and for identifying cells in projects in collaboration with various partners.
Participation in designing an original R & D program and proposal of innovative initiatives with Canadian companies and other organizations to promote technological development, especially of analytical microdevices and molecular identification methods including next generation sequencing.
Establishment of industrial partnerships for performing R & D work.
Communicating effectively orally and in writing to disseminate scientific and technological developments, taking into account the work done for clients or representing NRC in his/her area of expertise.
As the ideal candidate for this position you are a forward thinker recognized for your research contribution in R & D related to nanotechnology, nanostructures fabrication and their use for life sciences applications.
You will be working as part of a multidisciplinary team recognized for it’s innovation in the field of nanomaterials and molecular-based micro-nanodevices fabrication.
The impact of your contributions would be in progressing science & technology as well as practical applications in the field of security life sciences research and clinical application.
Applicants must demonstrate within the content of their application that they meet the following screening criteria in order to be given further consideration as candidates:
Ph. D. in biomedical engineering, physics engineering, electrical engineering, biochemistry, chemistry, physical chemistry, or a related field.
Relevant and recent R & D experience in design, fabrication and use of microfluidic systems for handling molecules, as well as in the integration of optical or electrochemical detection systems with microfluidic systems.
Recent R & D experience in the design and fabrication of microfluidic systems and their use in capturing molecular targets (e.g. proteins, DNA, metabolites, etc.) or cells (e.g. bacteria, viruses, rare cells, etc.)
Significant and recent R & D experience in the design and fabrication of continuous or droplet microfluidic systems.
Some experience in the development of partnerships and collaborations would be considered an asset.
Condition of employment
Candidates will be assessed on the basis of the following criteria:
Knowledge of clean-room micro/nanofabrication techniques such as nanoprinting, photolithography, micro/nano molding, ion beam-assisted metallization and reactive pulverization or electron beam lithography.
Significant knowledge of the design and fabrication of microfluidic systems and microfluidic control components such as valves, pump and mixers.
Significant knowledge of the various micro/nanofluidic platforms and handling methods such as micropumping, droplet-based centrifugal, and capillary.
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing i.e. strategic or business plans, reports, and presentations.
