We are looking for a vibrant and dynamic Research Officer to support our Medical Devices portfolio. The Research Officer would be someone who shares our core values of impact, accountability, leadership, integrity and collaboration.
The Research Officer will conduct innovative R & D activities on the design, synthesis and functionalization of magnetic nanoparticles and on the production of magnetic microstructures and nanostructures in microfluidic systems with a view to using them to capture cells or other biological targets (proteins, nucleic acids, exosomes...) and to detect bacteria in clinical or food samples. The work will be carried out as part of projects between NRC and its government, industry and academic partners.
This position's activities will primarily cover development and optimization of magnetic nanostructure preparation techniques (nanoparticles, nanowires) and their functionalization in capturing biological targets in the context of developing rapid diagnosis applications in the biomedical, pharmaceutical, environmental and agri-food sectors.
More specifically, this key activity includes the following duties:
Development of methods for the synthesis and characterization of nanoparticles with magnetic/non- magnetic core-shell architecture for biological applications.
Design and application of surface functionalization techniques for metal oxide or polymeric micro/nanoparticles to recognize bacteria and viruses in matrices and cells in projects in collaboration with various partners.
Participation in designing an original R & D program and proposal of innovative initiatives with Canadian companies and other organizations to promote technological development.
Communicating effectively orally and in writing to disseminate scientific and technological developments, taking into account the work done for clients or representing NRC in his/her area of expertise.
As the ideal candidate for this position you are a forward thinker recognized for your research contribution in R & D related to nanotechnology, nanostructures fabrication and their use for life sciences applications.
You will be working as part of a multidisciplinary team recognized for it’s innovation in the field of nanomaterials and molecular-based micro-nanodevices fabrication.
The impact of your contributions would be in progressing science & technology as well as practical applications in the field of security life sciences research and clinical application.
Applicants must demonstrate within the content of their application that they meet the following screening criteria in order to be given further consideration as candidates:
Ph. D. in chemistry, physical chemistry, materials engineering or an equivalent field.
Relevant and recent experience in R & D in the synthesis and functionalization of magnetic nanoparticles by wet chemistry.
Recent experience in R & D on the design and production of core-shell nanostructures such as Fe3O4/SiO2, FeO/SiO2 and their use for antibody binding to capture molecules (e.g. proteins, DNA, metabolites) and cells (e.g. bacteria, viruses).
Recent R & D experience in the design of processes and the fabrication of metal structures (Au, Ni, etc.) such as thin films and micro/nanoparticles through catalyst deposition processes.
Some experience in the development of partnerships and collaborations would be considered an asset.
Condition of employment
Candidates will be assessed on the basis of the following criteria:
Practical knowledge of wet chemical synthesis processes for magnetic nanoparticles such as FeO and FeCo.
Practical knowledge of wet chemical production processes for metal-oxide or metal-metal core-shell nanostructures (e.g. FeO/SiO2, FeO/Au).
Knowledge of chemical functionalization of metal oxide surfaces, antibody binding. aptamer binding, and medication binding.
Knowledge of metal micro/nanostructure production processes (films, catalytic nanoparticle deposition).
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing i.e. strategic or business plans, reports, and presentations
