Your challenge
Printable Electronics (PE) is a transformative technology that will add intelligence to printed products, reduce the cost of manufacturing electronic devices, is environmentally sustainable, and will change the way we live, work and play. PE is at the intersection of two well-established Canadian industries: ICT and printing. NRC is the only Canadian research and technology organization with the track record, expertise and infrastructure to address challenges along the whole value chain.
NRC is seeking a Research Officer with proven skills in coating and printing technologies to work for the Printable Electronics Program. The candidate will work closely with circuit designers, components developers, and other team members and our industrial partners to develop printing and coating procedures for integrated low cost, printable electronics circuits. The primary responsibility of the incumbent will be to develop printing processes using functional inks for flat/rotary screen printing, S2S/R2R gravure, reverse gravure, flexography, thermal transfer, and other printing techniques for the fabrication of printed transistors, memories, and various electronic components.
Screening criteria
Applicants must demonstrate within the content of their application that they meet the following screening criteria in order to be given further consideration as candidates:
Education
Ph.D. Degree in Physical Sciences or a Master’s Degree in Engineering combined with work experience in research or technology development.

Experience
Significant experience in at least three of the following printing/coating technologies: flat/rotary screen printing, S2S/R2R gravure printing, reverse gravure printing, flexoprinting, and slot-die coating. techniques;
Significant experience in the integration of various printing techniques;
Significant experience in ink characterization and materials science research;
Basic experience in ink formulation and functional circuits.
Equivalency
An equivalent combination of education and extensive experience in an industrial, academic or government Printable Electronics research & development environment may be considered.

Assessment criteria
Candidates will be assessed on the basis of the following criteria:
Technical competencies:
Solid knowledge of different S2S and R2R printing technologies;
Solid knowledge of integrating different printing techniques in fabrication process;
Solid knowledge of ink rheology and ink characterization;
Basic knowledge of conjugated polymers and polymer blends;
Hands-on ability in designing printing screens, plates and rolls for multilayer and high resolution printing;
Hands on ability to operate the printing systems;
Ability to work on project in both an independent fashion and in a team environment and to bring it to a successful conclusion (as evidenced by a record of achievements such as successful projects with clear deliverables, patents etc. in the field).

Salary range
This position is classified as a Research Officer (RO), a group that is unique to the NRC. The RO group uses a person-based classification system instead of the more common duties-based classification system. Candidates are remunerated based on their expertise, skill, outcomes and impacts of their previous work experience. The salary scale for this group is vast, from $38,921 to $125,067 per annum, which permits for employees of all levels from new graduates to world renowned experts to be fairly compensated for their contributions. In addition, an incumbent occupying a position within the RO Groups is currently entitled to receive a terminable allowance of $8,000 per year.
